Sustainability Leading the Way in Oldham’s Town Centre Regeneration

Oldham Council and Muse are making progress on delivering a greener, more inclusive future for Oldham town centre, with sustainability firmly embedded at every stage of the transformation.

As the long-term regeneration partnership continues to take shape, both the Council and Muse are aligning the delivery of Oldham Town Centre with Muse’s Sustainable Development Strategy. Originally published last year, the strategy sets out a robust framework for how regeneration should respond to the climate crisis, deliver social value, and support healthier, happier places to live and work.

The strategy focuses on six core themes, all of which are being applied to the Oldham regeneration programme:

Social Value

Creating long-term, positive outcomes for local people, businesses and the wider community.

Health and Wellbeing

Designing high-quality places that support active, sustainable lifestyles and positively impact physical and mental health.

Nature

Delivering a net gain in biodiversity and improving access to green and public spaces.

Net Zero Carbon

Reducing embodied carbon in construction and achieving net zero in operation.

Circular Economy

Eliminating waste and embedding resource efficiency through smart design and sustainable materials.

Certifications

Meeting high standards across sustainability, social value and wellbeing by working to leading industry benchmarks.

Oldham’s town centre regeneration, which will deliver up to 2,000 new homes across a number of core and opportunity sites, is designed to meet a wide range of housing needs, from young professionals to families and affordable homes. Beyond housing, the regeneration will introduce new retail, cultural, and leisure spaces to support Oldham’s growing evening and night-time economy.

Crucially, the project directly supports Oldham Council’s Green New Deal, which outlines the borough’s ambition to become the greenest in Greater Manchester and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

This regeneration will create a town centre that reflects Oldham’s communities and supports long-term growth, with sustainability embedded at the core of every stage.
